About John Boyd Dunlop

John Boyd Dunlop (1840–1921) was a Scottish inventor and veterinary surgeon renowned for developing the first practical pneumatic (air-filled) tyre. In 1887, aiming to improve his son's tricycle ride on Belfast's rough roads, he crafted a tyre by inflating a rubber tube and fitting it to the wheel. This innovation significantly enhanced comfort and performance. Dunlop patented his design in 1888, unaware that a similar concept had been patented by Robert William Thomson in 1845; however, Thomson's idea had not gained commercial traction. Collaborating with businessman Harvey du Cros, Dunlop co-founded a company to manufacture these tyres, which evolved into the Dunlop Rubber Company. Despite the success of his invention, Dunlop sold his rights early and did not amass substantial wealth from it. He passed away in Dublin in 1921, but his legacy endures, with the Dunlop name remaining prominent in tyre manufacturing and motorsports
