About Lillian Bland
Lilian Bland (1878–1971) was a pioneering Anglo-Irish aviator, journalist, and photographer who made aviation history in 1910 by becoming the first woman in the world to design, build, and fly her own aircraft. Her creation, the Mayfly—so named for its uncertain prospects—took flight in Randalstown, County Antrim, marking Ireland's first powered biplane flight. Bland's unconventional spirit defied Edwardian norms; she smoked, wore trousers, and pursued interests like jiu-jitsu and motoring. After her father persuaded her to abandon aviation by offering a car, she channeled her passion into establishing Belfast's first Ford dealership. Later, she emigrated to Canada, where she ran a farm. Bland's legacy endures as a testament to her fearless innovation and determination in a male-dominated field.
